'The men in suits are deciding': Ben Fordham and Shelly Horton go head-to-head over working from home

By Lucia Hawley|

The coronavirus pandemic forced the workforce to adapt to a new way of life, one where working from home became the new normal.

As we now adjust to post-pandemic life, many workers have been ushered back into the office จC whether they like it or not.

"Research has been done and it shows that working from home advantages women more than men," Shelly Horton told Ben Fordham in 9Honey's He Said She Said series.

Horton explained women tend do more domestic tasks like "childcare, caring for elderly parents or people who are ill"?, which are all easier to do when working from home.

As a widespread return to the office takes place, Horton argued that ?working at the office undoubtedly advantages men who, she contends, have less responsibilities at home.

"The men in suits are deciding what days they'll be in and what days they'll be out, and basically whether or not they can work from home," Horton said.

"So should it be a vote or a group decision rather than a boss decision?"

Horton's argument struck a chord with Fordham, who didn't necessarily believe the debate of working from home or the office had to be gendered.

"I know that you love bringing gender arguments into every discussion on planet," Fordham joked.

"Working from home was useful for a time, it will be useful forever for a certain section of the working community. But by and large, it is a danger to all of us and is a threat to all of our jobs."

Fordham justified his reasoning, saying, "Once you work out that a person doesn't need to be in the office, then, as a boss, you very quickly will jump to the next step, which is 'OK, if I don't need [that person] in the office, then... I don't need [them] in the country.'

"You will then come to a conclusion that you can find a worker for half the price or a third of the price in another part of the world."

Horton clapped back, "I don't think people are going to just send it offshore. I think that's that's ridiculous."
