'Is your relationship doomed?': Ben Fordham and Shelly Horton on sleeping in a separate bed from your partner

By Lucia Hawley|

In modern society, it is widely accepted that couples จC married or not จC will share a bed together.

In fact, sharing a bed with your partner is so normalised that choosing not to do so can often lead to the implication that a relationship is unsatisfactory.

"Is it ever okay for a partner to sleep in a separate room to the other partner?" Shelly Horton asked Ben Fordham in 9Honey's He Said She Said series.

Fordham revealed that he and his wife occasionally sleep in separate rooms, but said there is usually reasoning behind it.

"If one of us is unwell, then typically one of us will retire to the spare room," he said. "The other thing as well is that if I've got a sore throat, or if I'm a bit sniffily, or whatever, then that will keep Jodie awake at night so she will move rooms"

"Sometimes people presume that if you're going into the separate room, that there's some problems. I think that's crazy," Fordham added.

Horton agreed with Fordham, arguing that sharing a bed with someone isn't as glamourous as it may seem.

When Horton first started dating her husband Darren, she revealed he had terrible problems with snoring, a far from ideal situation for her จC a self professed "light sleeper."

"It was waking me up four times a night and it got to the point where I was like... 'This is not working for me. I've got a massive job.' And he was amazing. He just went 'You know what, let's fix it.'"

Darren made a trip to the dentist and got a mouth guard to prevent his snoring.

"Attractive right?!" Horton joked.
