Man furious after his mother forces his pregnant girlfriend to sleep on the floor

By Bronte Gossling|

A man has written of his fury at his mother for forcing his girlfriend, who is five months pregnant, to sleep on the floor when she sought refuge at her mother-in-law's house in an emergency.

Seeking advice on whether the way he handled the situation was adequate from the Reddit community r/AmITheAsshole, the man explained his girlfriend, who he calls Rose in the post, had visited her family who lives "far out of town" at the last-minute, and in the evening on her way back home, her car broke down and she had to pull over.

The man, who was overseas at the time, explained his brother Chris lives an hour and a half from where Rose was "stranded" and came to pick her up and "sorted everything out," which he was grateful for. Chris, however, is living with his mother, and took Rose back to their house กช which is where the problems started.

"My mum seemed to really like Rose (or at the very least tolerated her) จC but after we announced that we were expecting, something definitely switched in her," he explained for context, revealing he and Rose had been together for four years.

"She has become extremely rude and disrespectful towards my girlfriend. She makes passive-aggressive comments at every chance she gets. I've had to take a step back from my mother until she fixes her behaviour."

Rose's emergency visit to his mother's house จC during which he says his mum did initially kept her disdain quiet จC was no different. Rose helped prepare dinner and washed up, all the while engaging in "decent conversation" with his mother. When Chris went to bed, however, things took a turn.

Due to the fact his mother lives in a two-bedroom apartment, and both bedrooms were taken, Rose assumed she would be sleeping on the couch. She was, however, wrong.

"My mum gives Rose the thinnest blanket ever and basically screams at her, telling her that she has to sleep on the floor to not 'ruin her couch,'" the man says. "She tells Rose to 'make do,' with the pillows on the couch and the blanket that provides zero warmth."

"Rose thought about protesting, but ultimately decided against it. According to Rose, my mum kept opening her door to check if she was sleeping on the couch, so she couldn't even try to sleep on the couch."

At 5am in the morning, Chris found Rose in the living area and let her sleep in his bed. The man found out about the whole situation from Chris, who told him not to make a "big fuss about it."

The man, however, did the "exact opposite," and angrily called his mother, telling her that she was disrespecting Rose "so badly."

"She tried to defend herself by saying, 'That she didn't harm the baby,' and 'it's okay for pregnant women to sleep on the floor,' but I refused to hear any of it. Chris agrees with me, but told me that I shouldn't make it a fight. I feel like I'm losing my mind."

Reddit users were quick to reassure the man he was in the right, one writing, "I would put boundaries on the mother seeing the baby. She shouldn't see the kid unless she can respect the mother."

Another wrote: "Thank you for standing by your partner! And your mum is a total [asshole] here... who makes a pregnant woman sleep on the floor when there's other options?? Your mum definitely has some sort of grudge that she needs to get over, and quickly."

"Listen closely," another user implored. "Your mum is feeling threatened because there is another woman about to become a mum in the family. This feels like her role is being taken away and will lead to worse behaviour. You have to have a zero tolerance policy for this."

"Sit your mum down and tell her that she will always be your mum. Also tell her that if she continues to treat your girlfriend this way, it will damage her relationship with you, so she needs to knock it off."

The man ultimately clarified in the comments, "Unless she fixes her behaviour, she's not seeing my newborn."
