'Just because they have kids': Woman takes issue with parent colleagues expecting leave 'priority'

By Jo Abi|

A US woman has labelled parent colleagues as "rude" for expecting priority when requesting annual leave.

Callie, who shares content on TikTok as @_cal_cifer, says she takes issue with parents who "steal" the holidays of workers who don't have children.

Her video was in response to a comment by one of her TikTok followers who claimed "parents should be given priority when it comes to school holidays."

"No! You do not get priority because you chose to have kids," she said.

"If the week of spring break at school is so important to you because you're planning a family trip, you need to show initiative and take that time off.

"If somebody else you work with happen to ask off for those days first, I'm sorry but I guess you're s--t out of luck!"

Many commenters seem supportive of her complaint.

"The only days I could even remotely understand are like mother's day or father's day but still request it off," said one.

Another made the point: "Just because someone has children doesn't make spending time with their family more important than when I want to spend time with mine."

"It's not like schools hide the days off the kids will be getting," one said.

One mum commented: "As a mom of 3, I completely agree. Anyone's lack of preparation is not anyone else's problem. Can it be asked nicely, sure. If they say no, too bad."

As the conversation continued it seemed the real problem was workplace expectations of employees when it comes to this issue and not the parents themselves.

"Hot take I just feel like jobs should be more lenient with time off in general, for everyone," one TikToker wrote.

"I was told at a job that my priorities as a non parent weren't valid compared to parents. I hated that because on my days off i would schedule my self care hair nails spa appts etc. & would get called in because a parent had a sick child like oh well no my problem," another shared.?

"I think what's wrong is expecting ppl to change their plans like asking is fine but guilt tripping and forcing them is wrong," another said.?
