Neighbour begs apartment residents to stop using washing machine at 4am: 'This is very unfair'

By April Glover|

Nobody likes nosy neighbours. But no-one is particularly fond of loud and obnoxious ones, either.

One person has found themselves stuck in the middle of an awkward situation after stumbling across a note pinned to the front door of their apartment building.

"Dear neighbours, 4am is not an acceptable time to use a washing machine," the brief but assertive note reads.

"I have been woken up several times with your washing machine. Please stop! Refrain from using the washing machine before 7am. I have been woken up on too many occasions. This is very unfair when people are working."

Sharing the message to Reddit, the British resident said they had found the note and couldn't figure out which side they were on in the washing machine war.

"This was on the front door to our block of flats - can't decide whose side I am on (I am neither the neighbour nor the note leaver)," the caption on the post reads.

Despite the Reddit user's diplomatic approach to the note, many commenters were of the same, firm opinion.

Dozens of people on the thread agreed it was unreasonable for a neighbour to be using their loud, rattling washing machine at 4am.

"I also live in a flat like this, I try not to have the washing machine running any later than 8pm or so for this exact reason," one person wrote.

Another added: "I had a neighbour who would do laundry at 5AM and he must have had an industrial machine designed for an entire hotel. The engine on that thing was louder than I could have ever imagined."

"I lived in a flat which was in an old Victorian building, my neighbour's kitchen was above my bedroom and he put his washing machine on at 3am once. It was insanely loud as if my room was shaking," another said.

Meanwhile, a few logical people offered up excuses for using a washing machine outside of the normal time bracket.

Some said the neighbour might do shift work and could only find time to wash their clothes during odd hours. Others said some energy companies share less for usage outside of peak times.

"I work night shifts and live on my own.. I very much try my best to do all laundry in days off but there have been circumstances where I have had to do a load at 5am," one reasoned.

"I'm just being the devil's advocate here but the point I'm making is, not everyone works a 9-5 job and not everyone knows the story behind this."

One added: "Some energy companies charge less for out of hours usage, so might be a factor."

This heated Reddit discussion comes after a similar note was found in an apartment complex in Australia.

A renter in a block of flats in NSW shared a photo of a sign posted in their communal laundry room in June this year.

It warned residents not to use the washing machines or dryers between the hours of 10pm and 9am.

"There is ample time to wash clothing due to the current climate," the sign read. "Tenants reside near this area, please respect early/late night noise."

This sign also triggered a fierce debate in a private Facebook group about laundry etiquette.

I think it's ridiculous," one person argued. "Those commercial machines don't make much noise, I can't imagine it being an issue."
