Turia Pitt's Instagram for fire-affected businesses overwhelmed by support

By Maddison Leach|

Athlete and motivational speaker Turia Pitt has revealed the incredible support Australians have shown for businesses affected by the ongoing bushfires.

Living with her husband and two-year-old son in Ulladulla, on the NSW south coast, Pitt has seen the impact of the fires that have devastated communities around her and set out to help locals affected by the disaster.

She started the @spendwiththem Instagram page as a way to promote the local businesses in fire-ravaged towns who will be struggling in the coming months.

Many of the businesses rely on tourists for a large portion of their profit, but with whole towns destroyed by fires, their future looks bleak.

Pitt encouraged her followers to shop from the businesses shared on the page and "put money directly in the pockets of the people and communities who need it the most, and need it NOW".

"Help them rebuild. Make them feel heard. Spend with them," she said.

Pitt's bushfire initiative gained so much traction it actually had a 'break the internet' moment.

The account was a hit and grew so fast that Instagram temporarily shut it down, but @spendwiththem was back up and running quickly, and has since gained more than 107,000 followers.

"Instagram has actually shut us down momentarily because we have grown too fast," she told The Project during the shut down.

Now, thousands of Australians have used the page to connect with local businesses in areas devastated by the fires, and the impact has been incredible.

This morning, Pitt shared two screenshots of messages from some of the businesses promoted on the account, revealing that both had received more orders in the last 24 hours than ever before.

"The response has been unbelievable," read a message from Stony Creek Farm Distillery, located just outside Bega on NSW's Sapphire Coast.

"We have more orders in one day than in one day than in our entire lifeกญ were spreading the word that other businesses need love."

"We don't know how else to help, but we're gonna donate 10 per cent of all these sales to the local disaster relief fund."

The distillery has posted regular updates on the fires in their area and were at one point trapped between fires in Cobargo to the north and Werri Berri to the south and west.

Photos they shared showed skies turned orange and fires creeping over the hills in the distance, towards Mumbulla.

Guerrilla Roasters, from the NSW south coast, also saw an incredible spike in orders after Pitt shared their profile.

"Mate we have done more coffee orders in the last 24 hours than the entirety of our business!" they wrote.

"It has seriously created another job already. We just hired someone to pack orders from tomorrow."

Pitt has already shared tens of businesses on the page and plans to continue promoting locals as the fires continue to rage throughout the country, urging Australians to help keep local businesses afloat.
