Woolies customer claims they were told to bag their own groceries at regular checkout

By Jo Abi|

A Woolworths customer claims a cashier at the supermarket told them to bag their own groceries during a recent shopping trip.

"So came back from shopping and as per title, the cashier told me to bag groceries myself (had about $130 bucks worth)," they wrote on Reddit's 'Sydney' thread

"When questioned whether this was their job or COVID measure, cashier responded by stating it 'made the process faster'.

"I obliged but was left curious whether this is accepted, tolerated and normal now days? I should also highlight this is not the self check out area."

In the comments, a Woolworths cashier quickly put paid to this claim.

"I go faster when I pack myself (I'm a cashier) why they thought you packing is faster is beyond me. I work at Woolies and really she shouldn't have asked unless you have dirty bags or something like that," they wrote.

"We have a sign on our register to answer the question of packing bags saying the process is faster if we do it."

"Coles and Woolworths charge 30 to 50% more than Aldi so they should be bagging for you. Personally I choose to shop at Aldi and save that money," another commented.?

Another said: "Yeh that would annoy me, if I wanted to bag my own groceries, I'd go to self-checkout or Aldi.

"Depends on how much patience you have ... but you could hold up the line and say I WANT TO SPEAK TO THE MANAGER and refuse to bag any items while waiting."

Others offered different perspectives about how they choose to grocery shop.

"I honestly would use the self service bag your own grocery lanes all the time because I'm faster at scanning and bagging than most of the Coles people who seem to move in slow motion on purpose but if I've gone through an actual checkout it's for a reason," one customer shared.

"Usually because I'm struggling with my baby who always screams her head off in shopping centres unless I'm holding her in a specific way so if I was asked to bag my own groceries when I had my kids with me I'd flat out refuse."

Another commenter said: "I'd just walk away and walk into Aldi. If I'm going to bag my own groceries, I'll go to the cheaper shop."

A Woolworths Australia spokesperson has provided the following statement to 9Honey regarding the situation. It reads: "Our teams work hard to serve thousands of customers to the highest standard every day, however, we don't always get it right.

"Our checkout operators are expected to bag groceries at our manned checkouts if that's the customers wish, as per our bagging policy.

"We encourage this customer to reach out to our friendly Customer Service who'll be able to further assist them."?
