Fruit flies won't stand a chance against fun dinner plate hack
By Rachael Gavin|
T?he pesky little bugs flying around your fruit bowl, bin and sink can be difficult to get rid of, especially once they've started buzzing around the room.
There are plenty of DIY traps and tips for dealing with them, but one woman may have stumbled on the most fun and effective.
Elaine Cruz shared her hack for catching fruit flies in an Instagram reel and it looks both effective and satisfying.
Watch the video above.
"?Thank me later but you're welcome. Is it kinda gross? Yeh Does it work? Also yeh," she captioned the video.
Cruz uses a plate covered in a layer of oil to swat at the insects as they fly through the air, which really allows you to get out some of the frustration the critters cause.
The hack clearly works well because when Cruz holds the plate up to the camera you can see at least half a dozen fruit flies have already been caught from a quick plate swatting session.
Those who saw her Instagram post loved the idea, especially as it targets the insects when they're flying around.
"?OMG! Thank you I do the apple cider vinegar in a jar thing, but it's the ones that jump out of the bin at you that I'm after!!!" one said.
"The little flies are loving your fruit bowl at the moment then. I love this idea except I'll end up throwing the bloody plate!" a woman commented.
"?Oooooo very good , my plants get fungus gnats , they are relentless lol" another posted.

The video prompted others to share their own favourite ways of dealing with fruit flies, with two options the most popular.
"?Also... a hoover. I was batting at them at first, but they're so light that my hand was pushing them away. A vacuum sucks them in," a woman said.
"What is with these my kitchen had loads of them last week no fruit in sight I did the apple vinger thing aswel but for the ones that were to smart I just got the [vacuum] out and sucked them up..." another wrote.
"?Apple cider vinegar with a drop of washing up liquid, traps so many..." a follower said.
Cruz explained in the comments that the plate hack is for the insects flying around her vinegar trap. So if some of the fruit flies are evading the apple cider vinegar and dishwashing liquid, the plate hack might just help.

However, while commonly referred to as fruit flies, the insect buzzing around your fruit bowl and bin is actually a vinegar fly.
"Fruit Flies are flies whose larvae feed in the fruits of various fruit trees, as well as in the fruits from several fruiting vegetables. They should not be confused with the fly that breeds in compost bins (Drosophila melanogaster) and is known in Australia as the 'Vinegar Fly', but in the US as 'Common Fruit Fly'," garden brand Yates explained in a guide to getting rid of fruit flies.
"Vinegar Fly is from a different family จC Drosophilidae จC and not from the family of true Fruit Flies จC Tephritidae."
