Aussies reveal how often they wash 每 and hopefully change 每 their sheets

By Rachael Gavin|

T?here's nothing like slipping under the covers to drift off to sleep in freshly washed linen, but that doesn't mean it's a regular occurrence.

With busy lives and plenty of other laundry to do and things to clean in the house, changing bed sheets is one of those things on our to do lists that can get delayed from time-to-time.?

To find out just how often people are managing to wash their sheets, we asked Aussies in an exclusive Nine.com.au poll.

And it turns out we're a relatively clean bunch.

Out of everyone who voted, 41 per cent said they wash their sheets weekly. However, for some that depended on the weather.

"Wash the sheets weekly, unless it's raining on the weekend, then it's fortnightly," one commented.

"Sheet washing is weekly average depending on climate, hot and humid [weather] washing is more frequent," another said.

?Fortnightly is a common time-frame between clean sheets too, with 37 per cent of respondents washing this often.

While experts suggest washing sheets every one to two weeks? to remove bacteria, sweat, dirt, dust and skin cells, some people stretch this out a little longer to monthly.

The survey found 14 per cent of respondents wash their sheets monthly, and for some this time-frame makes a lot of sense.

"I know that washing sheets monthly might sound gross, but I live alone, don't have a sexual partner and I shower at night, not in the morning, so my sheets stay cleaner longer," one explained.

But just 5 per cent wash their sheets every few months, which is probably stretching it a little bit, but is better than not doing it all.

On the flipside, a very small number of people are washing their sheets more often than once a week. Just 2 per cent of respondents said they wash their sheets every few days, which would surely help them feel fresh in hot summer weather.

To be able to wash your sheets on a regular basis it helps to have at least two sets of sheets, so one can be in the laundry hamper or on the clothesline when you put a clean set on the bed.

?Then when you go to wash your sheets make sure you don't overload the machine as this stops sheets from washing effectively.

Use your preferred laundry detergent, and if you need a booster add half a cup of baking soda to help brighten whites and remove odours.

Instead of fabric softener, add a quarter to half a cup of white vinegar to the fabric softener compartment. This is just as effective as fabric softener, but doesn't leave a film on clothes or leave residue in the machine.

Once your sheets are washed, pop on the clothesline in the sun for the ultimate fresh sheet feeling.
