The key to cleaning under heavy furniture depends on one thing

By Rachael Gavin|

We've all seen the layer of dust and dirt that can accumulate on visible surfaces that haven't been cleaned in a while.

Well, imagine what's lurking under furniture so heavy or full it can't be easily moved.

One person has become so frustrated by the difficulty of cleaning under their sofa, they reached out to Reddit's Cleaning Tips group for advice.

"So I just spent 20 minutes trying to clean under my couch and I'm convinced there's gotta be a better way than what I'm doing lol. Right now I either: move the whole couch (RIP my back), shove a broom under there and hope for the best or honestly just ignore it until I can't anymore," they posted.

"What do you all do? is there some secret cleaning hack I'm missing or do we all just suffer through it? also if you're one of those people who moves furniture every week to clean under it - respect but also HOW?? curious what works for other people!?"

For many the answer is using a Swiffer, which is a brand of flat mop that can be used to sweep the floor, but anything similar will do.

"?Shove a broom/swiffer/vaccuum as far as possible. If I can't see it or reach it, it's none of my business. I'll move the couch to do a full clean a few times a year or if I know for sure something is under there beyond dust and bobby pins," one said.

DIY versions of a floor sweeper were also suggested.

"I attach a microfibre cloth to a yardstick with an elastic and sweep sideways under the couch. Most of the time it's cat toys that come out but it helps with dust bunnies too. I'm 63 so it gets done monthly because getting down there and back up again is tough," a Redditor said.

"Cleaning rag pushed around by skinny broom. Then vacuum," another commented.?

"I agree just shove whatever as far as it reachesกญ," a comment read.?

Others flip the furniture over with the assistance of another person, while for several robot vacuums are the cleaning tool of choice. ?

Some have furniture sliders on their sofas and one person shared their artist friend's creative hack of adding wheels to all furniture pieces.?

Another hack is to bring a leaf blower inside to push out everything from the small crevice under your sofa.

?However, there were many who said that whatever is under heavy furniture is none of their business, and if its too close to the ground to fit anything under it then leave it as is.

"?Shshshshshshshsh we don't talk about under furniture," joked one.

"?You can clean under furniture?" a Redditor said.

"?If the couch goes all the way to the groundกญ.I leave it. I will use my vacuum extension to vacuum edges, or however far it will reach. Sometimes I push it slightly away from the wall and use the vacuum extension and reach what I can. Maybe once a year I move it all the way and vacuum and wash the floor," another wrote.

And for some the solution starts at the time of purchasing by choosing only furniture that is easy to clean under.

"I have modest standards, a Roomba, and a leggy couch," one wrote.?
