We've been using shoe racks wrong according to a TikToker's clever hack for increasing storage space

Shoe storage racks seem simple enough: just set them up, place them by the door or in the wardrobe and start putting pairs of shoes on each level.
However, it turns out we've been doing it wrong and dramatically reducing the amount of space available.
A mum on TikTok, who goes by the handle @cleanwithjoanne, has shared her hack for fitting more shoes into a storage rack, and it is a complete game-changer.

"Show me the life hack you randomly saw one day that is now an unconscious standard practice in your life," the voiceover in Joanne's video said.
In the video, Joanne can be seen putting a pair of shoes flat on top of the rack before shaking her finger to gesture 'No'.
Then she picks up the shoes and places them toe-side down between the bars so the shoes are stored vertically.
This method means Joanne can store a lot more shoes than she would be able to if they were placed horizontally across the bars.
The only downside to this method is that not all shoes can be stored vertically. As you can see from Joanne's video there is a pair of boots that are stored flat on the bottom row. It also might not work for really small or large shoes.
Joanne's followers loved the hack which has so far had 769,000 views.

Many who watched the clip were stunned they hadn't considered putting their shoes in the rack this way. Others, meanwhile, are planning to go out and buy the rack จC which is from Ikea จC now they know how much it can fit.
"This is brilliant. How have I never thought about this? Thank you!" one posted in the comments of the video.
"Wait, what? I just threw this rack away because it didn't hold enough shoes," a woman posted.
"Not me seeing this after I just put all my shoes on a new rack and them not all fitting. Love this hack.. guess I'm redoing them tomorrow," another commented.

Some followers even had a bonus tip so that you don't have to look at the ugly soles of your shoes if you use Joanne's hack.
"I do this too, but the soles face the wall so I don't have to look at the dirt on them," a woman said.
If you like the idea of storing your shoes vertically but don't have the space for a shoe rack there is an alternative option.
Another TikToker, @ash_mul, shared the clever way she stores her shoes in a video on her channel.
Aisling installed half a dozen or so towel rails onto the end of a wardrobe and then tucks the shoes in toe-side down between the rails and the wardrobe.
So with two great shoe storage options, there's no excuse not to get your shoes organised neatly (and you might even be able to fit in a few more).
