There's a reason why your fan isn't cooling the room down according to TikTok

By Rachael Gavin|

Summer has, on average, been milder than usual this season, but this week it's really starting to heat up. That means we've been doing all we can to stay cool, and for many of us that's getting out our pedestal fans.

If you've got your fan going full speed and finding it's doing little to cool you or the room down, that could be because you're using it wrong. Turns out there's a specific position fans need to be put in to work effectively.

TikTok user Lottie Dalziel, who is also the founder of sustainability website Banish, made the revelation on the video sharing platform and said it will "blow your mind".

"What you need to do is move them to the best spot in order to cool down. So utilise breezes from outside, so place them by any windows or doorframes to push that breeze in and around your room," she said in the video.

"If you're leaving them in the middle of the room you're just blowing hot air everywhere."

One of Lottie's followers shared another useful tip about fans that could help cut down on your power bills.

"Could we also add that they only work because we sweat? So many people who leave them on when they're out of the room 'to keep the room cool'," they posted in the comments.

Another follower reminded people to clean their fans or they'll end up blowing dust around the room, which could irritate your airways.

"Yasss and regularly taking the guard off and dusting it makes such a huge difference," they wrote.

But if you're sweltering through hot temps without any cool breeze then this hack probably won't work for you.

"No good if the air outside is hotter than inside, happens at work when they open roller door my fan blows the hot air at me and it's like a sauna," a follower wrote.

Instead there are plenty of other cool down tips to try, including putting a hot water bottle in the freezer, wearing light fabrics like cotton, keeping the blinds and curtains closed and sipping an icy drink.
