Supermarket Sleuths: The small grocery change that could save you $28 in an instant

By Jo Abi|

I?t is a busy time of the year, which can make saving at the supermarket a little more challenging than usual.

We are left to quickly grab what we need from our local Woolworths and Coles, without having done the necessary research to ensure we're paying the lowest prices possible.

But what if I told you there was a temporary workaround that will help you get through the next couple of busy months? And it could save you up to $28 per shop?

You've likely been walking past it without even realising the bargains that are to be had.

I'm talking about Woolworth's 'The Odd Bunch' and the Coles 'I'm Perfect' range of fruits and vegetables that are set up at all Woolworths and Coles stores.

Here, you can purchase 'imperfect' fruits and vegetables that may be oddly shaped or have markings that don't impact the the taste, and it all costs much less than it's more visually appealing counterparts.

In this week's Supermarket Sleuths I've crunched the number to show you what you can save by choosing these fruits and vegetables, and its pretty impressive.

I used the fruits and vegetables available at my local Woolworths and Coles supermarkets.

You may find a different range of fruits and vegetables at your local.

Woolworths 'The Odd Bunch'

Woolworth's 'imperfect' range is called 'The Odd Bunch' and this week I found some great savings for supermarket shoppers at my local at Baulkham Hills in Sydney, all in a dedicated section.

They were selling green apples, mangoes, pears, lemons and limes

The apples were selling for $3.90 per kilo, compared to $5.90 for a kilo of Granny Smith Apples. That's a saving of $2 per kilo.

Next up we have four packs of mangoes for $6 for a pack of four which works out to be $1.50 each which is unheard of for mangoes at this time of the year.

The nearest most affordable mangoes at Woolies are their Lady Jane mangoes for $2 each, so customers are saving $2 by choosing the four-pack of 'imperfects'.

Coles 'I'm Perfect'?

My local Coles at Castle Hill in Sydney is selling carrots, avocados, apples, pears and sweet potatoes as part of their 'I'm Perfect' discount range, but they don't have a dedicated section.

Instead, discount 'imperfect' items are located next to their more 'perfect' counterparts.

I found 'I'm Perfect' carrots for $1.73 per kilo. This is compared to $2.40 per kilo for standard carrots, as saving of 67c per kilo.
