'It's all in the timing': 95-year-old Nana reveals her trick to conceive a girl

By Nikolina Koevska Kharoufeh |

N?ana knows who she is. She's been on this earth for 95 years, has 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and has never missed a week of bingo at the local RSL.

She is such a force that I call her Nana and she isn't even my grandma. Now that's respect.

?So when she recently sat me down at a family dinner and told me the secret to conceiving a girl, I knew what she was telling me had to be right.

Here I am passing down the trick to you.

Oh, and a quick disclaimer: Methods of trying for a boy or a girl don't guarantee success, and aren't always backed by scientific evidence. But hey, you've got a 50 per cent chance! ?

"It's all in the timing," she told me as she gestured for me to sit down next to her on the couch.

I hadn't seen Nana since I had my second son, Leo, nine months ago.

The first thing she asked me when I walked through her grandson's front door (my brother-in-law) was, "When are you having your next?"

It wasn't a question of whether I was or wasn't, but rather when.

?And after nervously admitting to Nana that I wasn't yet 100 per cent sold on trying for a third because I could end up with three cheeky boys, she told me not to worry.

Nana has four kids of her own. Three girls, Sylvia, Marina and Lucia and one boy, Michael.

And while it's been a while since she was in that phase of life where she was falling pregnant and giving birth, she remembers it like it was yesterday.

"I remember before I fell pregnant with my last I knew I wanted a boy, so I figured it out," she said proceeding to explain how she uncovered the secret to conceiving each gender.

"I went back and thought about it and realised that with each of my girls, I had conceived them either right before my period or right after," she explained.

"It was always ?within those two weeks."

"So I thought I'd try to see if I waited to conceive halfway between my periods, whether it would be the key to having a boy," she told me with a smile in her voice.

When she went to her first doctor's appointment after falling pregnant for the last time, she told the doctor her theory.

"I told him that I knew this time it was going to be a boy and he laughed."

You see when Nana was pregnant, there was no test to tell you the gender of the baby before they were born. So it was a long nine month wait before she got the results of her experiment.

And ?you guessed it, Nana was right. She gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, her son Michael.

"I went back to the doctor after he was born and I reminded him of my theory and he said I was right," she proudly said and gave me a wink.

"So it's that simple. If you want a girl, you just do the opposite of what I did. You conceive ?either right before your period, or right after."

The confidence in Nana's voice not only convinced me to try for a third, but to also try out the theory so I can perhaps fall pregnant with a little girl.

"I don't have too much time left so you'll have to do it quick so I know it worked," she laughed.

So I guess I better hurry up! ?
