The TikTok video shows the couple, who were under the impression that they were having identical twins, holding a confetti popper excitedly waiting to find out whether they would be having boys or girls.

The popper then explodes with a blast of blue confetti, the couple look elated and are even laughing.

"Laughing as we already have a boy and we were pretty sure like everyone else we were having another two boys," the video caption says.

However, the couple are then handed a second confetti popper by a party guest.

The husband and wife look at the camera with a look of extreme confusion as identical twins are almost always the same sex.

The husband then pops the second confetti popper which reveals the gender of the other baby is a girl.

"That throws a spanner in the works," someone cheekily calls out from the crowd of family and friends.

"Can't believe it, have been told from 12 weeks they are definitely identical," the video caption says.

Users commented their own experiences with finding out that their identical twins are actually fraternal.

"I had to see a perinatologist throughout my pregnancy & was told my twins were identical. Wrong!" one viewer commented.

In extremely rare circumstances, identical twins can actually be different genders. This is attributed to something called Turner's Syndrome in which the X chromosomes (sex chromosomes) is missing or partially missing.

However, it is unclear whether the couple's twins are actually fraternal or identical despite the differing genders.
