New mum furious after dad changes baby name while she sleeps

By Madhurima Haque|

Naming a new baby can be tricky if both parents don't agree - and the process can be made even harder if you are trying to honour other family members in the process.

One father has taken to Reddit to explain that he and his wife were finding it hard to agree on a middle name for their second baby - a daughter.

"My wife decided because she had carried the children she would decide both of their middle names," he wrote.

"At first I didn't care about the middle names but while my wife was pregnant with our second my grandmother passed. I asked her if we could give the baby my grandmother's middle name and she said no. We fought but I gave up...Until the nurse came in with the papers to name the child.

"My wife was passed out asleep and the nurse just asked if we had a name picked out. I said yes and filled out the form with my grandmothers middle name."

When his wife woke up, he decided to confess immediately, leading to a huge fight. The wife intended to change it, but the dad says it's not possible since both parents need to consent to the name change.

In the three days since the incident, his wife and the rest of her visiting family has been giving the father the silent treatment, with even his own family admitting "it was a cruel thing to do while she was asleep."

Fellow Redditers wholeheartedly agreed with this assessment.

"Your wife just gave birth and passed out and you use it as an opportunity to get your way in an argument? You two seriously need to work on your conflict resolution skills, this is so bad," said one commenter.

"Show some respect. I would be livid with you. She gave birth to your child and decided to go behind her back after labor? What kind of husband are you?" another questioned.

"I think your grandmother would be ashamed of you for being a sneaky a-----e. Your wife was probably still in pain after giving birth instead of being there to comfort her, you pull this move," said another.

"You disenfranchised your wife when she was recovering from a major physical trauma. How is she supposed to trust you? This was an outrageous breach of trust. You need to arrive at a consensus. Neither of you should be acting unilaterally," another added.

Some commenters weighed in on the naming argument.

"Wife made unilateral naming decisions with the first kid, so (the dad) hit back with the second one. They both suck and need some serious couples counseling," said one commenter.

"What I honestly don't understand about these name arguments is why no one thinks to just give the child two middle names. Problem solved," one said.
