Hamish Blake says Bandit from Bluey is a 'gold standard' dad

By Georgia Weir|

Bluey is a show that is continuing to be hailed as not just great for children but also for parents. Hamish Blake and Hugh van Cuylenburg are two high-profile dad's that are singing the praises for the children's show this week on Blake's new podcast How Other Dads Dad.

Speaking to Blake on the podcast, the Resilience Project author referred to an episode of Bluey that he felt he related to with his own parenting.

"You know that episode of Bluey with the pool? With all the best intentions, Bandit takes [the kids] to the pool but he doesn't pack anything - no thongs, hats, no sunscreen," van Cuylenburg explains.

"I feel myself doing that all the time and I don't want to be like that."

"I have this conversation with my wife, she'll say 'I've got mum brain and you don't - I've always got the list'" the radio personality replies.

"It's the yin and the yang of mum and dad together that meant the kids had a great day in the pool," Blake concludes.

The podcaster himself as well as wife Zo? Foster Blake have both had cameos on the wildly popular kid's show. In one episode Hamish voiced a sarcastic 'Hammerbarn' employee. The couple also voice the Russell's, a mother and father of a young pup called Jack who "can't sit still or remember anything".

But this wasn't the only TV show that the two dads have taken parenting inspiration from. Blake says earlier in the episode that he was actually inspired by the American kid's show Mr Rogers' Neighbourhood.

"It was an amazing show. It was about love. It was a very gentle-paced show and kids adored it."

"His whole mantra was 'I love you because you're you'," the podcaster reminisced. "If I can execute that everyday, I'm doing well."

Fred Rogers is fondly remembered for his gentle voice and for teaching kids and parents alike about the complexity of emotion. Most recently, 30 Rock alum Jack McBrayer spearheaded his own show citing Mr Rogers' kindness and love as a major inspiration for the program.

Blake echoes this by saying that Mr Rogers has inspired him to consistently remind his children that he loves them.

"The final message is: I love you with my whole heart, with everything I am. I love you because you're you," Blake explained.

Although Blake is adamant on reiterating this message of love to his children he laughed that his children can sometimes find it "annoying."
