Husband storms out after delivery room dispute

By Madhurima Haque|

The final decision about who is in the delivery room when a woman gives birth is made by just one person - the mum-to-be herself. One dad doesn't seem to understand that rule, and it has resulted in an stand-off with his wife who is due to give birth to their second child in three months.

Posting on Reddit, the woman explained the first time she gave birth, her husband asked if she would let his mother inside the delivery room. The woman refused as she and her mother-in-law have a "bitter relationship".

Instead the just the woman's own mother and her husband were at the birth of her first baby. The mum planned for the same arrangement this time around - something she said her husband was "clearly not happy about".

"I asked if he had a problem with the arrangement...He stated it was massively unfair that I would allow my mother in the delivery room but not his," recounted the mum.

"He mentioned that since I got to choose who was in the delivery room last time he should get to choose who gets to be inside of the room this time.

"I told him he was insane if he thought I would let his mother see me in extreme pain. It would be an incredibly uncomfortable situation."

Finally she told him that if he wanted his mother in the delivery room then he couldn't be in there either, which caused him to leave the house in anger.

"I can't help but to feel guilty that I drove him away. I don't know if I should stay with my current decision anymore," the woman wrote.

However commenters encouraged the mum to stand firm in her decision.

"When did squeezing a whole other person out of your vagina become a spectator sport? Of course you want your mum there (I think most women do if they have a nice relationship) for support. And why would you want someone in the delivery room who doesn't even like you when your cash and prizes are hanging out there for everyone to see???" said one commenter.

"She should ask him if he'd like to get naked, put his feet in stirrups, and display his genitals for her mother. Birth isn't a party. Whoever is in the room is there for support of the mother, and who she wants to support her is the only important factor. This seems to be getting way out of hand," added another.
