'I trialled reusable nappies for a week and this is what I honestly think'

By Nikolina Koevska Kharoufeh |

A ten-month-old baby goes through quite a few nappies a day. On average I change my boy Noah about four times and day and double-nappy him at night - to avoid leakage and unnecessary interruption to my well earned mum rest!

So when I was asked to trail Modibodi's Reusable Nappies I was keen on giving it a go. Both to see what all the fuss is about and ease my guilt for contributing so much waste to an already wasteful world.

And if I'm being honest, the nappies surprised me!

At first I didn't think I would be a reusable nappies type of mum. Working part-time and being a very social person who is always on the go - I am constantly looking for any baby products that make my life easier.

I go through half a pack of baby wipes a day because I can't stand mess, use disposable bibs when we're out and have even gone so far as to pack puree in plastic takeaway containers that I can just throw them out rather than have to bring them home to clean.

Yes, I know I am not doing great things for the environment.

But mums understand just how hard day-to-day life can be with a baby and the need for products that reduce our workload. If that means a convenient disposable nappy, then that's usually the option we go for.

So, starting off my week of reusable nappies I wasn't too excited. I prepared myself for a lot more cleaning, a lot more packing when out and the potential of an annoying night leak. But I was surprised when these imagined inconveniences were not actually that inconvenient.

To begin the Modibodi Reusable Nappies fit Noah really well and were easy to put on. The adjustable buttons allowed me to tighten them in a few areas so they weren't too bulky on him.

To my complete surprise I didn't experience one leak the entire week. Not one! So the fit and absorbency of the nappies was of the highest quality.

The addition of a Modibody Reusable Nappy Booster at night helped avoid any accidents, which quickly eliminated my fear of a midnight sheet change. It was the equivalent of using two nappies at night.

To be completely transparent, when it came to cleaning up a number two I did find it inconvenient having to wash the nappy before putting it into the laundry load. But, considering I usually have two or three pieces of clothing smeared with food or vomit sitting in my laundry sink anyway, it wasn't too much extra effort.

Washing the nappies was relatively easy considering I just threw them in with the rest of Noah's load that week. The nappies can also be gently tumble dried so when I needed one quickly that was super convenient.

Another thing I noticed was the inside of the nappies were super soft, which in a way reminded me of my favourite pair of comfortable, cotton undies - so I can only assume Noah enjoyed wearing them.

The funky prints were so cute that I actually left Noah pants-less on a few occasions - to show off his new bottoms.

And while I had to make a little more room in my baby bag for spare nappies and booster pads, one thing that came in handy when out and about was the Modibody Reusable Nappy Bag.

The bag is waterproof, fits about two dirty nappies and the best bit - it eliminates odour! So no gross dirty nappy smells to deal with. I even used the bag to enclose Noah's wet swimming nappy after his swimming lesson. Win!

Having only four nappies to alternate between probably wasn't enough so I would suggest having at least 12-15 nappies if you're planning on fully switching your child to reusable nappies.

Overall the week went really well and I am now a semi-converted 'reusable nappy using' mum.

As Noah is looked after by a range of family members while I work, he is still in disposable nappies for half the week. But since my trial, I have made the effort to use the reusable nappies during the time he is at home with me.

I cheat a little on weekend and lean into the convenience of disposable nappies on a family day out, but overall I feel better about making a conscious decision when I can to use the Modibodi Reusable Nappies.

I will say I also sleep a little better now at night knowing I'm helping protect our environment.

So I say if you've ever been curious about reusable nappies. Give them a go! You might be just as surprised as I was.
