Kim Kardashian breaks silence over Balenciaga controversy

By Naomi White|

K?im Kardashian has broken her silence over Balenciaga's controversial fashion campaign which sparked calls to boycott the fashion powerhouse.

The ads for their Spring/Summer 2023 collection showed two little girls, one standing on her bed, holding teddy bears dressed in bondage-like gear.

Another, featuring their 'hourglass bag', appears to show court documents relating to a US Supreme Court judgement relating to a child pornography law.

Balenciaga pulled the ads following the backlash. ?

Kardashian, who is regularly seen sporting the label and last month also publicly distanced itself from her estranged husband Kayne West over anti-semitic comments, stayed silent over the controversy at first.

Earlier today, however, the reality star broke her silence, saying the campaign had left her 'shaken'.

Adding she had been 'quiet' on the saga as she was waiting until she could speak with the brand to 'understand for myself' how this happened.

"As a mother of four, I have been shaken by the disturbing images. The safety of children must be held with the highest regard and any attempts to normalise child abuse of any kind should have no place in our society กช period," she said in a statement.

"I appreciate Balenciaga's removal of the campaigns and apology. In speaking with them, I believe they understand the seriousness of the issue and will take the necessary measures for this to never happen again. "

Kardashian had herself suffered a backlash following the ads, with fans angered by her silence, which many interpreted as indifference.

In Instagram posts posted by the reality star, fans have inundated her comments asking her to speak on the issue.

"When are you canceling Balenciaga," asked one. "Balenciaga?????????? Say something," added another. ?

Balenciaga released it's own apology last week, saying they were sorry for any offense caused. ?

In a statement released by the brand on their Instagram story, Balenciaga said they were taking action against 'parties responsible' for the shoot.

?"We apologise for displaying unsettling documents in our campaign," they said.

"We take this matter very seriously and are taking legal action against the parties responsible for creating the set and including unapproved items for our Spring 23 campaign photo shoot. We strongly condemn abuse of children in any form. We stand for children's safety and wellbeing."?
