Meghan Trainor says nurses implied her antidepressants caused her son to be in the neonatal intensive care unit

S?inger Meghan Trainor says when her son was born, the nurses caring for her and her newborn implied she was to blame for him needing to be admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

"They kept asking me if I was on antidepressants during the pregnancy, and I was, but on the lowest dose possible," Trainor, 28, told Romper.

Trainor said she rebuffed the nurses, saying "all" her doctors had told her taking antidepressants was "safe" for her and they "wouldn't affect" the baby.

"It was really f--ked up,"? she added of the experience, where her now one-year-old son Riley had to go to the NICU as he was struggling to wake up to feed.

"They had no name for what was wrong. He just wouldn't wake up," she said of Riley's unknown condition.

"They said, 'It's really up to Riley when he wants to wake up.' I'd be like 'Really? Can't you just zap him and get him up?'"

According to the Mayo Clinic, ?overall, taking antidepressants while pregnant is associated with birth defects, but the risk of birth defects and other problems associated with mothers taking antidepressants while pregnant is very low, though some antidepressants are associated with a higher risk of complications for the baby than others.

Riley was eventually released from hospital and was able to go home with Trainor and her husband, 30-year-old actor ?Daryl Sabara.

Trainor, however, did say that she and Sabara would worry about Riley because, as a baby, he would hardly cry.

?"We kept being like, 'Uh-oh, what's up with him? Is this what serial killers are like when they're first born? They never cry?'" she said.

She opened up about how she felt the need to stay strong amid her worries about Riley, and not break down.

?"All the wives, all these mamas, you can't cry, you can't be like 'Today was f--king tough,'" Trainor told the publication.

"Nope, you have to be like, 'Everything's perfect; we're all perfect and happy.' And it's not easy."

During Trainor's labour and delivery with Riley, he was in breech and had to be delivered via C-section, which Trainor described as "terrifying."

?"He didn't make noise when he came out. I was like, 'Why isn't he crying?'" Trainor told The Today Show in last year.

"I got to see him for one second before they took him away. That was probably the worst part."

Trainor, however, is still looking to expand her family despite the ordeal, saying in August she wants to get "knocked up" by the end of 2022.

?Trainor and Sabara have been married in 2018. Riley was due on Valentine's Day last year, but arrived early on February 8, 2021.

Trainor wrote on Instagram at the time: "This sweet baby boy's due date was Valentine's Day. We got to meet him Monday, Feb 8th! We are SO IN LOVE."?
