Midwife Edwina shares her top tips to breastfeed successfully

While it's recommended to breastfeed your newborn baby until six months of age if at all possible, it is a personal choice.

It's important to also acknowledge that breastfeeding can be "really hard, really isolating and really painful".

"That's why I always say fed is best," says Birthbeat's Midwife Edwina. "Do not beat yourself up if you are having difficulty breastfeeding. Ask for help, get support and if you can't successfully breastfeed, it is not a fail."

According to Midwife Edwina, it's important to be patient and to seek the help of a midwife or lactation consultant the first few times you try and latch.

"Be patient," she advises. "It can take time for both you and your baby to be comfortable."
