Mother kept away from baby due to drug test results

By Jo Abi|

A mum in the US has been kept away from her newborn baby after failing a drug test shortly after his birth.

Elizabeth Dominguez had given birth to son, Carter, in a New York hospital when Child Protective Services (CPS) was called.

The woman was told she had tested positive for opiates, which she says came from a poppy seed bagel she had eaten for breakfast.

"I did a urine test and it came back that I tested positive for opiates,"?Dominguez, 29, tells WKBW.

"I called my husband freaking out saying 'how is this possible?' I donกฏt do drugs."

CPS was called as part of hospital protocol.

The new mum begged for another test to confirm she wasn't a drug user.

"I told the lab, I told the hospital, I told everyone, 'Retest me. Take my blood. Do whatever you have to do, because this isnกฏt right,'" she said.

The mother and son were kept apart for the first day of his life during subsequent testing before being reunited.

The stunned woman says she is sharing her story as a warning to others.

"I felt absolutely horrible," she said. "I felt like a terrible mother leaving him."

She says all mothers-to-be should avoid eating poppy seeds so they don't experience the same trauma as she did.

"I just want everyone to know that this could happen," she said. "Itกฏs such a terrible thing and I donกฏt want it to happen to anyone."
