Mum's hilarious money-saving Christmas hack: 'What babies really want'

By Nikolina Koevska Kharoufeh |

A baby's first Christmas is an exciting time for parents and they can get carried away spending hundreds on new toys for their little one.

A mum-of-three knows just how tempting it is to do that, so has taken the time to warn parents online not to make the same mistake she did - offering them a much cheaper option.

Posting a video on TikTok, Laurie from the US reminded parents that babies don't care much for expensive toys and colourful gadgets but are rather happy to just play with general household items. So she is encouraging mums and dads to not bother with the toys this year.

An option that saves parents money all while giving the baby what they really want.

In the video, the mum sits her daughter in her high chair and passes her a number of different items to play with.

Each time she offers the baby girl a toy alongside a general household item to see what she picks.

Without fail, the baby ignores the toy every time and goes for the random item - whether it be a hairbrush, nappy, packet of baby whites or TV remote.

The mum captioned the video, "Just a gentle reminder with the holidays coming up...".

She wanted to warn parents against wasting money on expensive baby toys, thinking it will put a smile on their child's face this Christmas.

To prove her point even further, Laurie uploaded another video offering the baby another few options to play with.

A wooden spoon, toilet paper roll, empty water bottle, cardboard box and sweet potato were all a hit, stealing the baby's attention every time they were offered alongside a toy.

In a final video Laurie's little girl is so preoccupied playing with the strings hanging from her mum's hoodie, that she completely ignores the expensive jungle gym sitting in the corner of the room that her parents purchased for her.

Once again proving the theory that babies prefer playing with simple everyday items over pricey kids' toys.

The mum captioned the videos "What a baby really wants for Christmas", telling parents to save their money this festive season and avoid buying any more toys that will go unnoticed.

Mums and dads loved how relatable the videos were, thanking the mum for the money-saving tip.

"I'm just going to box up the stuff in the house my seven-month-old shouldn't have and give it to him (remote, cell, etc)", one mum wrote.

Another parent revealed last Christmas she didn't bother spending any money on her kid's Christmas present but rather put together a DIY toy, "We made a baby hanging mobile out of plastic spoons and it worked as well as the $50 wooden one!".
