New mum regrets her daughter's unusual name: 'I've let her down'

By Nikolina Koevska Kharoufeh |

When deciding on an unusual name for your baby, it's best to be confident that you really like it before making things official. One new mum is regretting her six-month-old daughter's name so much so that she is considering changing it completely.

The woman revealed she felt "pressured" into the name by family and friends and began to regret the choice not long after her daughter was born. She now despises it so much she says she feels she "let her daughter down".

In a post on Mumsnet, the new mum didn't reveal what the name was but explained it was "an unusual 'nature' name and mostly used for a boy".

Although the name was on her list when she was pregnant, the mum says she didn't realise how "try-hard" it sounded until she began using it once she was born it the dislike of the name had been "gradually eating away" ever since.

After thinking the name may grow on her, the mum waited to tell her husband and he now thinks that she's "lost my mind" as he still loves the name.

Fellow mums and dads took to the woman's post to suggest a few ways the mum could go about dealing with the situation. While some think she still has time to change the name as the baby is so young, most suggested she make a nickname out of it and use that instead.

"Although names are important they aren't the be all and end all", one person wrote.

Many were confused as to why she would hate the name so much, as most nature-inspired names are well-loved. "I love nature names. River is awesome if that's what it is. Nature names are timeless," someone commented.
