'Back off fun police': Chris Hemsworth under attack for 'cruel' prank on their kids

By Nikolina Koevska Kharoufeh |

OPINION -- When I was growing up my dad would pull pranks on my sisters and I all the time. His go-to joke was luring us outside to help with something, only to spray us down with the hose. He did it so many times that I don't know how I didn't pick up on it sooner...

Pranks are funny. They're even funny when they backfire. And more importantly, they're usually harmless.

So why in the world are we now slamming parents for pulling them on their kids?

The latest victims of this ridiculous shaming จC Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky. The high-profile parents pulled a classic 'birthday cake in the face' prank on their son for his birthday and are now being called out for being too 'violent' with him.

Chris Hemsworth has come under fire over an Instagram post where his wife Elsa Pataky shoves their son's face into a cake for his birthday with some calling the act violence against children. (Instagram/Chris Hemsworth)

The debate all started in the comments of a photo dad Chris Hemsworth posted to his Instagram from his twins Tristan and Sasha's birthday celebration.

"Happy 9th birthday to my two little men! Only one way to eat cake in this house and that's to have mum slam your head into it face first!! "Hey mum I don't like chocolate cake I prefer vanilla" "oh really son, what about now"?" the photo was captioned which shows mum Elsa Pataky holding the son's head down in chocolate cake.

Hemsworth and two other kids at the party are seen laughing along, while Pataky is getting ready to hold the other birthday twin's face in the cake right after.

All I can see in this photo is everyone having a good time.

But others didn't quite see the fun in the prank. Soon after the photo was posted, people began criticising the parents ?for 'smashing' their son's face in the cake.

"Why people smash their kids face in the cake is above my understanding but whatever," one person wrote.

Another commented, ?"Does anyone here want cake all over their face? Didn't think so. Why would your kid? And it's so wasteful."

And one went so far as to say, "Why do people think this is funny? It's so violent."

Violent?! OK I think it is time for us to step back and calm down.

It's a cake. What looks like a soft and delicious chocolate cake with deliciously airy buttercream on top. Nothing about landing in that cake seems 'violent' to me.

Something thankfully others on the post agree with. "Violent? You acting like the cake icing is hardened mud," one user commented.

Since when did we become so protective of children that we can't even indulge them in the humour of a prank anymore? ?

Now I am not at all saying all pranks are okay. Yes of course, there are pranks that go to far. Pranks that are unsafe. Online challenges that parents and kids participate in that end in disaster.

But as with everything, ?we shouldn't let those who take things too far ruin the fun for the rest of us.

I mean here I am writing about it as a 30 year old, clearly remembering the grin on my dad's face when he realised he managed to fool us for the 14th time.

So rather than attack Hemsworth and Pataky online, judging their parenting and the way in which they bring smiles and laughter into their home, let's have a good chuckle over it.

It's cake in the face guys! And Chris Hemsworth laughing in the background... What more do you want in a picture? ?
