The 'tough topic' Peter Overton says should be discussed by families

By Nikolina Koevska Kharoufeh |

Raising two teenage daughters has its challenges according to Nine newsreader Peter Overton, and those challenges come with a few tough conversations. Conversations he and his wife Jessica Rowe never shy away from.

Proud dad to Allegra, 14, and Giselle, 12, Overton told 9Honey Parenting that the topic of consent is a regular discussion in their household - something he and wife Jessica encourage their daughters to be open and honest about.

"I've got to say Jessica and I are very, very open and encouraging in communicating with them," he reveals.

Consent first became an important discussion in the household when former New South Wales Kambala School student Chanel Contos launched a petition in 2021 demanding students be taught about consent in the classroom.

"That really engaged our daughters. I believe our girls are very mature and they understand about that subject matter," Overton explained.

Since then he says his wife Jessica has been driving the conversation in their house and that he, alongside her, tries to provide his girls with a male point of view on the matter.

His youngest Giselle now has a strong opinion that it should be taught in school and is passionate about ensuring the topic is not brushed over.
