Why former child star Ryan Reynolds won't let his children follow in his footsteps: 'Usually about the parents'

By Merryn Porter |

Before he made it big and became one half of Hollywood's It couple alongside Blake Lively, R?yan Reynolds was a child star in his native Canada.

But he won't be letting his children follow in his footsteps, and he seems to have taken a swipe at his own parents for backing his early career.

Overnight in the US, Reynolds received the prestigious American Cinematheque Award during an award ceremony in Beverly Hills, which he attended with Lively, who is expecting the couple's fourth child.

During an interview with People afterwards, he said he would not be letting his own children follow in his footsteps and become child actors.

"Putting a kid in a business like this, it's generally not about the kid. It's usually about the parents," Reynolds, 46, told the outlet.

"When they're older, they can do whatever the hell they want. I'm excited for that.

"Our job is to foster as much interest in as many different things as possible at this point."

Earlier in the night, Lively, 35, moved Reynolds to tears in a speech, where she not only talked about him as an actor, but his even more important role as a dad to daughters James, seven, Inez, six, and Betty, three.

"This man, he has contributed so much to the world's most international happiness with his art, his heart, his philanthropy, his humour, his integrity, his unmatched work ethic, his self-deprecating levity, his hard-earned depths in his scripts," she said.

"And now I am his home, and our girls are his home. He races home, whether it's from across the globe or a meeting across the street, he is hard-wired to get home. If he came home from set not in his wardrobe, we would be very concerned."

"He would show up with mud, fake blood, real blood, prosthetic scars, superhero suits, shoes or clown makeup, daddy always comes home. And that man races back to his real life like nothing I have ever seen.

"He is the most present person you will ever meet. And yes, he creates magic in his work but man, oh man, does he create magic in his real life."

Reynolds, as expected, paid tribute to his wife in his acceptance speech.

"??I get to spend my days working with my favourite actor of all, my wife, Blake," he said.

"You're the greatest ghostwriter in Hollywood history. You have literally authored me into this moment."

Reynolds is the first Canadian to receive the award.

He began his acting career in Canada in Nickelodeon's first and only teenage soap opera called Hillside when he was just a teenager.

In all, 65 episodes were filmed between 1991 to 1993. It aired in the US as Fifteen and It was also syndicated around the world.

Reynolds was the most notable cast member and the show was credited with launching his career.

Just two months ago, Reynolds gushed about life at home with his wife and daughters, and the lazy US summer they spent together.

"My summer was quite nice actually," he said. "It was just nice to be at home with my family. Summertimes at home are pretty special."
