Sister-in-law refuses handmade baby gift because it's the 'wrong colour'

When it comes to gifts, it's supposed to be the thought that counts. But one man has discovered that's not always the case after his sister-in-law refused to accept a handmade baby shower gift.

In his post on Reddit the confused gift-giver told readers he was in a tough financial situation and decided to hand-knit a blanket for his new niece and gift it along with a few smaller items. It took him a month to make, but the mum-to-be didn't like it.

"My sister-in-law was peeved and gave me back the blanket for being the 'wrong colour'. It was a deep navy blue yarn and I guess it's a boys' colour, whatever," the post reads.

Some days later, the man's brother called to ask what he would be buying the baby. "They said I went off the registry so they're still expecting something from me," the post reads.

The only items left on the registry were prohibitively expensive, so the couple issued an ultimatum: a pricey registry gift, or a blanket with the 'right' colours. However the man does not have the time or inclination to knit another blanket.

Unfortunately the family appears to be on the parents-to-be side in the gift dispute - his mother is backing the brother, the father doesn't approve of men knitting, and while the brother has apologised, his wife has continues to give him the cold shoulder.

Reddit commenters have vehemently condemned the family's response.

"There is absolutely zero things that you need to apologise for, and I'm sorry your SIL and brother are so ridiculous as humans, or that your parents have taught you that any of this is even remotely normal as behaviour," one person wrote.?

Another user recalled a similar experience: "Several years ago, I was invited to a shower for a cousin on my ex's side and the invite said only registry gifts. I knew the future mum was serious about it because I saw her call out a relative who didn't buy off the registry a few years before, at her bridal shower."
