Sleep expert debunks commonly believed baby sleep myth

By Madhurima Haque|

A sleep expert has debunked a baby sleep myth that many parents swear by. Alice, a certified sleep coach, shared a popular parenting belief with her TikTok followers; "'I should keep my baby up longer so they sleep longer.'"

"No, don't do that. Stop it - it doesn't work!" she said, "Babies that don't nap in the day, or that have really late bedtimes, will fight sleep."

"Sleep begets sleep so the more they sleep, the more they will sleep! Sleep keeps them relaxed, which helps them to fall asleep at nighttime.

"If you keep them awake they're going to be overstimulated and they're probably going to cry or meltdown," she concluded her video.

Commenters debated the effectiveness of this method in the comments. Some tired parents had not found success.

"I tried and it did not work he was just over tired and still awake. I've just come to terms with the fact he doesn't like sleep," said one resigned commenter.

"They just hate naps and so hard to convince them to relax a little," said another parent.

"My baby cries going horizontal all day long. It's a constant fight no matter what," shared another commenter.

But others swore by the method.

"I learnt this the hard way. I always thought that the less he slept in the day the more he slept in the night and boy was I wrong," said one parent.

"This is why I let my baby sleep whenever during the day," shared another.

"Yes! I always thought kids always seem to sleep better if they've had an afternoon nap," said another parent, sharing their observation.

"More sleep = more sleep!!!! I didn't know how the hell this worked, but it does. My baby sleeps sooner and longer after a nap."
