They are one of reality television's biggest success stories. When Sam Wood picked Snezana Markoski as the winner of season three of the The Bachelor, Australia rejoiced.

Now almost six years on, the couple is married and the parents of three girls as well as Snezana's daughter from a previous relationship.

But the birth of their baby Harper three weeks ago came with complications for both mother and baby, and the couple has only now revealed Snezana, 41, suffered a life-threatening illness.

In an emotional post to her Instagram account overnight, Snezana Wood revealed she suffered sepsis and went on to pay tribute to her husband.

Captioning the post "Daddy cuddles" and including a photo of Sam with his daughter, she wrote, "Can't imagine how stressful and scary it was for you @samjameswood seeing our baby taken to special care nursery and me get taken away to another hospital, all while keeping your cool and staying calm and not letting me see you worry.

"Our little Harper had an infection and mama here sepsis but you never told me or showed me how serious it was or how worried you were. You stayed calm, which kept me calm.

"I asked you to stay with Harper till she was OK, and you did, then you came across to the hospital I was taken to to make sure I was OK, then back again to Harper, and so on."

Wood explained that less than an hour beforehand, the three of them "were together bursting with love and joy, not to mention in shock and giggling at how quickly Harper came into this world" before "things quickly changed for the worse."

"Fast forward three weeks and two days later and we are on the road to having our little girl home with us and her three older sisters," she said, before ending the post, "I love you @samjameswood and thank you again for being you, thank you for being my strength and helping me get through what has been the toughest, most stressful three weeks we've ever experienced.

"You are my everything, I love you to the moon and back and couldn't have gotten through this without you."

Wood replied to the post, writing "?????? you are the strong one."

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body damages its own tissues and organs in response to an infection. It can lead to septic shock, organ failure and even death if not diagnosed and treated early.

The couple announced Harper's birth earlier this month in matching Instagram posts five days after her birth.

At the time, they said Harper was born one month early, on May 4, and that Snezana had to be rushed to intensive care soon after and remained separated from her baby daughter for five days.

Sam wrote, "Thirty minutes after this photo was taken Snez became sick. Really sick and before we knew it Harper was off to the special care unit and Mum was into ICU. Of course in true Snez Mum fashion her only thoughts were for her little baby and it was breaking her heart that she couldn't hold her."

They also shared a video of the emotional moment mother and daughter were reunited, with Sam writing, "Dad crying, oh it was soooo beautiful."
