Mum's shock after young sons' 'impressive' local adventure: 'Rocked up in helmets and underpants'

By Heidi Krause|

Kids, huh? They sure can be full of surprises.

After a busy morning of bus trips and Kmart visits, my two boys, aged four and six, were keen to bust out their scooters. What a great idea. Finally, there was a break in the deluge of rain.

They had been tearing around the house in undies and gumboots, but fortunately, I convinced them to put on t-shirts. As they strapped on their helmets and raced out the door I told them to stay on our street and footpath.

I had tasked myself with lasagne for dinner and needed to get busy with my bolognese. I popped my head out every now and again to check on them and at one point even heard giggles as they ran in and out of the house.

As the bechamel bubbled, I raced out and realised they were nowhere in sight in our immediate street. You can imagine my shock and horror when I turned around the corner only to find them marching proudly down the hill with a pizza box in hand.

My little rascals had apparently stuffed their Paw Patrol wallets full of silver coins from their pocket money jars, strutted into our local pizza shop and ordered themselves a small margarita. I honestly had NO idea.

As I ran up to meet them, I noticed a handwritten note on top of the box.

"Hi mum, we upsized them. They only had $8.00. All good. They are cute and well-mannered."

Oh my god. I was simultaneously horrified and impressed! Hilarious, terrifying, brave, adorable.

After sharing the story on my local community Facebook page, the post quickly struck a chord and accrued many comments.

"Absolutely awesome. This is what community is all about," noted one neighbour.

"That is absolutely brilliant! Please tell me there is some CCTV footage of their adventure for the 21sts!," commented another.

"I love this story! Zapparelli pizzas are the BEST!," said another.

"Children do sneak away now and then, happens to all of us," reassured another mum.

"My 10 and six-year-old can barely make it to the letterbox and arguing. This is amazing!", said another friend.

Sure enough, even the wonderful owners of the pizza shop chimed in to provide their side of the hilarious tale.

"It made our afternoon when they rocked up in helmets and underpants asking for a Margarita," wrote owner Niki. "We did grill them if mum knew and they insisted you did although when I told them one of our boys would walk them home the horrified look they gave me confirmed you didn't. They were then happy to walk down with him when we said he wanted to try out their scooter so they could carry their pizza box.

"Have to commend you in raising two audacious, well-mannered little boys," she added.

"To be honest I was bit disappointed, I was expecting a couple of rocks and buttons as payment. It's ok they got their glass-and-a-half of milk worth on their pizza," joked owner Zigi, referring to the adorable Cadbury ad.

The heartwarming message really made me appreciate living in such a wonderful neighbourhood. Kudos to Zaparellis Pizza in Lane Cove. Thank you for making my boys' day and for your generosity, understanding and care. And for making the best pizza in Sydney.

And for not judging my parenting!

As my husband gave the boys a stern talking-to about not venturing into shops on their own, it was a struggle not to give them a high-five and wipe the smile off my face.

Thank goodness for pizza and for good old-fashioned manners.

And thank goodness I didn't burn the bechamel sauce.
