'This is a cafe, not an office': Mum fuming after man's 'rude' act at cafe

By 9Honey Parenting|

A mum has confronted a man who she claims was rude to her, and her toddler, while working remotely at a cafe.

The woman took to a popular parenting website, Mumsnet, to explain the incident จC and ask if she was being unreasonable, sparking an interesting debate about cafe etiquette.

"Since when did i?t become acceptable for people to think a coffee shop is the same as an office?" she began her rant.

"I was just having breakfast and a coffee with my toddler and someone was taking a Teams call at a nearby table."

According to the mum, her child was being well-behaved? and simply "having a little babble and sing", as toddlers do, while she had a drink of juice.

"Obviously louder than if I was just sat by myself but really not a disturbance and no louder than any other table of two chatting," she continued.

As she noticed the man getting increasingly annoyed, the mum felt compelled to act.

"The man sat sighing and rolling his eyes for about 10 minutes until I just had to turn to him and say 'sorry but this is actually a cafe not an office, if you're in a meeting and need silence you're in the wrong place'," the upset mum continued.

"He did a big huff, picked up his laptop and walked off trying to find a new table but had to come back as it was too busy. Now he's sitting there giving me evil eyes."

The woman explained that she isn't normally a ?'confrontational person' but insisted that a public cafe at breakfast time is not the place to do a work meeting.

"If people want to rave about working from home then go f---ing work at home," she wrote. "People out in public don't need to tiptoe around you because you want a change of scenery during the work day while you sit in meetings."

Most people leapt to the mum's defence - supporting her decision to confront the man.

"Not at all unreasonable - it's a public space, child friendly. Why shouldn't you take your child to a cafe?"

"If he wants silence, he can lock himself in his bathroom at home!" said another.

"You're not in the wrong. I'm sick of people trying to take over cafes as their personal workplaces," commented a third. "Nothing annoys me more than people who sit there on Teams calls while working. It's so rude."

"Well done you! He's ridiculous," said another. "I hate kids in restaurants, but I agree with this totally. He was a d---."

"You are my hero. Wish everyone would calmly call out entitlement like this. I cannot imagine being so arrogant as to conduct a meeting in a cafe and expect everyone around me to be quiet!"

Others thought the mum had gone too far by approaching the man.

"It's all very easy to tell him to 'go to the office' but he might not have an office," pointed out one.

"There was absolutely no need for you to say anything," said another critic. "Someone 'rolling their eyes' is not a reason for you to be rude. I think you were, when you spoke up instead of going about your perfectly reasonable business.?"
