COVID positive mum-to-be under fire for hosting baby shower from bubble tent

By Merryn Porter |

Many women dream about hosting the perfect baby shower to herald the arrival of a new family member.

One mum-to-be was so desperate to ensure her big day went ahead even after she tested positive to COVID that she decided to set up a clear tent in her living room so she could still enjoy the festivities.

TikTok user amberlache94 shared a video this week which showed her sitting in the tent in the middle of her living room. Across the screen she had written: "When you test positive for COVID the day before your baby shower".

The video starts with a smiling Amber sitting on a white chair in the tent with a can of soft drink before cutting to another angle showing a man identified as her partner, sitting just outside the tent and grinning broadly as he holds a gift bag. Neither are wearing masks.

The video continues with images of her surrounded by a beautiful pink, gold, white and silver balloon arch while surrounded by a huge haul of gifts, and even posing with guests.

Amber wrote in the post: "I was not going to let COVID kill my baby shower" followed by the hashtags #babyshower #covid19 #covidbubble #pregnancytok #improvise #boostofhope.

The video has so far been viewed 3.8 million times and racked up almost 300,000 likes.

A second video posted the next day offered more scenes from the baby shower and seemed to fly in the face of criticism she had received for going ahead with the event.

She included a screenshot of a comment that had been left on her previous post: "Anything for some free gifts" and defiantly captioned the post: "My sweet baby girl is already so spoiled".

Responding to criticism of her previous post, she wrote: "I can see this is getting hate so let me say - first of all I tried to reschedule but there were no dates [until] after I had baby and so I let everyone know I had COVID and they could come at their own risk, and I basically went at the end and sat in a bubble and watched my baby daddy open the gifts".

"And so far everyone who attended my shower is negative for COVID. Hoping it stays that way and the bubble worked," she added with a fingers crossed and heart emoji.

But the vast majority of commenters were unhappy with her decision to go ahead. One wrote: "You're not even wearing a mask inside the bubble. At least try," while another wrote: "The ignorance. The stupidity. Oh my God."

Another said: "You couldn't have at least had you and your boyfriend wearing masks? Like come on," while another wrote: "If you were trying to protect those around you, you would have cancelled it".

But others defended the mum-to-be. "All these people acting like they don't go to restaurants, grocery stores or Target, unknowingly being exposed ...," one commenter wrote while another said simply: "I think it's brilliant".

In NSW, anyone who tests positive for COVID must self-isolate at home for seven days.

"Self-isolation means staying in your home or accommodation and remaining separated from others," NSW Health says, which includes "not having any visitors in your home, unless they are providing healthcare, emergency maintenance or emergency services".

All household contacts must also self-isolate for seven days.
