TV host Andy Cohen shares unusual plan for leftover frozen embryos

By Merryn Porter |

Anyone who has been through an IVF journey knows that if you are successful in creating a family there is one burning issue to deal with afterwards กช what to do with any leftover embryos.

It is a question that causes great angst for many people. Do you donate them to other childless people, give them to medical science or destroy them?

Now US TV host Andy Cohen, of Bravo TV's Real Housewives' franchise fame, has come up with an extremely unusual idea, admitting he plans to keep his leftover embryos in case his own children want to use them one day.

Cohen, 54, welcomed his second child, a little girl, Lucy, five weeks ago. She is a sibling for son Ben, 3.

Both children were the result of IVF and were carried by surrogates.

While he publicly announced he was having his first child, and even celebrated with a star-studded baby shower, he kept news about the impending arrival of his second child a secret until after she arrived.

He has also kept details of her conception and birth quiet until this week, when he appeared on Sirius XM's Jeff Lewis Live.

During the interview, he shared that Ben and Lucy were "biological siblings" from the same egg and sperm but were carried by different surrogates.

He also opened up about his plans for his remaining embryos, although he wasn't sure exactly how many there were.

"I have a few. I can't remember. I think I have three left?" PEOPLE reports he said during the interview.

He also answered a question about his plans for them.

"You know what I'm thinking กช this is crazy กช but if either of them cannot have kids, maybe in 20 years they'll defrost their sibling and raise them. Is that a weird thought?"

Cohen announced Lucy's arrival in a sweet post to his Instagram account. "HERE'S LUCY!" he wrote, referencing the TV show starring Lucille Ball. "Meet my daughter, Lucy Eve Cohen! She's 8 pounds 13 oz and was born at 5.13pm in New York City! Her big brother can't wait to meet her! Thank you to my rock star surrogate (ALL surrogates are rockstars, by the way) and everyone who helped make this miracle happen. I'm so happy."

Since then he has shared more photos of his growing family, including one of Ben meeting his little sister.

CNN broadcaster and Cohen's close friend Anderson Cooper was also snapped paying a visit.

While the snaps of Ben and his sister are adorable, Cohen also said during the interview that the usual sibling rivalry was rearing its head.

He said Ben was jealous that there was a new baby in the house and "loves her but is trying to kill her."

"The crazy thing is, by design, I am spending so much time with him," he said.

"Because, by the way, she doesn't know what's happening. I sit with her for a few hours a day and I'm like 'Just smell me. Hear my voice. This is me. I'm your dad.' But [with Ben], I'm really in there with him and I don't know if it's really registering how much time I'm spending with him."
