Couple's 'tacky' pregnancy announcement to family massively backfires

By Nikolina Koevska Kharoufeh |

Telling your family your are expecting is usually a very exciting and sweet moment. Something a couple very much looks forward to.

For one couple however, their pregnancy announcement completely backfired when family members decided to storm out of the house offended by the way they delivered the news. A completely unexpected reaction that the couple says, "ruined the surprise".

The story was shared on Reddit by the brother of the dad-to-be, who thought that the announcement was nothing but "trashy".

"My family has a 21+ Adult Only Gift Exchange, volunteer only. If you sign up, you have to spend $20 on each person", the post began as he explained the circumstances around the announcement.

The exchange occurred following the family Christmas celebration this year, a tradition that happens after all the kids are in bed for the night.

"My sister-in-law Kelsey and my brother Kyle both signed up to be on the list. They asked to go last because they had something special they wanted everyone to open together", the man continued.

The couple decided to use the exchange to announce the news that they were expecting. "Kelsey and Kyle spent $5 per person. It was a sonogram picture in a cheap dollar store frame, a note saying '$35 has been donated to the baby in your name' and a 2XL shirt with puffy paint that said BABY BELLA 2022", the post read.

An announcement not everyone was happy with.

"Kyle got up to use the bathroom and my Dad followed after him. They had an argument in the hallway and Kyle stormed out. Kelsey followed him", the brother explained. My Dad was like, 'Everyone can take their gifts back for Kyle and Kelsey, because this is bulls---, and they knew exactly what they were doing.'"

Some of the family decided to take back the gifts they gave the couple, not satisfied with the 'gift' the couple decided to give everyone else. A donation no one agreed to.

A few days latest the brother was paid a visit by Kyle who decided to get him another present to make up for what happened, though things escalated even further.

After he was asked if he liked the initial gift, the brother responded, "Everyone else got you a real present, with thought put into it. You didn't even get me a shirt that fit, that was printed professionally, and then spent the majority of the money on yourself".

He told his brother the announcement and present "felt cheap and ruined the spirit of the exchange". The brother left in a fit of anger.

The story has shocked readers online who all agreed the couple went about the announcement in the worst possible way.

"People need to stop thinking that somehow their baby is a gift to others", one person wrote saying the couple should have gotten real gifts like everyone else did.

Another said, "'Donation in your name' is 90 per cent of the time a tacky cop out in the first place. They donated the money to themselves".
