How much does a dog really cost? What to expect as a new owner

By Katrina Warren|

The choice to welcome a new four-legged friend into your home is always exciting, but it's important to make sure that the dog you get suits your budget, home and lifestyle.

The Australian Veterinary Association reports that pet owners spend, on average, more than $25,000 over the lifespan of their dog.

It's also important to consider that some breeds, like pugs, bulldogs, German shepherds, cocker spaniels and boxers, may be more prone to health problems, and so require more visits to the vet.
