How to keep pets safe at Christmas, according to Dr Katrina Warren

By Madhurima Haque|

T?he festive season isn't necessarily fun for everyone.

Christmas Day is one of the busiest and most expensive days for vet clinics, with pets potentially getting hurt from something they eat or even from escaping onto the road.

Dr Katrina Warren, 9Honey Pets' resident expert, shares some great tips to ensure our furry friends are safe these holidays.

Keep them somewhere safe and confined?

The first tip Dr Katrina ?has is to keep pets in safe, confined areas so they don't wander off in the hubbub of the holidays.

"Lots of pets get lost on Christmas Day, or worse still, get hit by a cars," she says.

"Make sure you pop them somewhere safe and confined, and give them a chew toy to keep them occupied, and check on them regularly."

Don't give them too many table scraps?

Dr Katrina warns to not ?be so generous with food from the table, as it can cause medical issues like pancreatitis.

Hosts and guests alike must keep in mind food that is toxic to pets, like chocolate, which could land your pet in trouble.

"A little treat here and there is OK, but don't give them a whole pile of stuff from the table," says Dr Katrina.

No cooked bones?

Though dogs are known for loving bones, Dr Katrina strictly advises against giving them any cooked bones from your Christmas roast.

"?Cooked bones can splinter and get caught in the mouth, throat, or gut, and you can end up with a medical emergency," she warns.
