Newlyweds return home after wedding to 'worst nightmare' after their cat was poisoned by flowers

By April Glover|

A bride and groom returning home from an overseas wedding opened the door to their "worst nightmare" after discovering their cat had been poisoned by flowers.

US newlyweds Katrina and Trevor had arrived from their wedding to find their beloved cat Mochi had accidentally ingested lilies, a plant that is toxic to felines.

Katrina explained on a viral TikTok and GoFundMe page that her friends had surprised the couple with gorgeous flowers and decorations around the house.

"The night we got home from our wedding was supposed to be something really magical. But what was a magical moment turned into our worst nightmare," Katrina said in her video.

"Our friends decorated our house with flowers and decorations. But the flowers that were in the house were lilies, which are the most toxic plant to cats."

Mochi, the couple's adorable moggie, is "plant obsessed" and decided to eat the lilies, Katrina told her followers.

Katrina said Mochi became "incredibly sick" and needed immediate emergency care.

"We called the vet and they told me if we didn't bring her in she would most likely die in the next four to seven days," she said.

"There was vomit everywhere, she couldn't stop going to the bathroom, and the noises she was making honestly still are haunting me."

Luckily, the lilies left for Katrina and Trevor weren't there for long and Mochi was able to be saved at the vets.

She stayed at the vets for monitoring for several days and cost the newly-married couple thousands of dollars.

They are even using their wedding money to pay for the mounting vet bills. "It's been a really scary time for us," Katrina added.

In an update to her followers, Katrina said Mochi's vitals were good and she has been eating again.

In a GoFundMe set up for the couple to pay for the vet bills, the entire ordeal was described as an "unpredictable nightmare".

Friends who set up the page said Mochi is Trevor and Katrina's "first baby" and issued a warning for other pet owners about the dangers of the lily flower.

According to the FDA, the entire lily plant is extremely toxic to cats, including the stem, leaves, petals, pollen and even the water in the vase.

"Eating just a small amount of a leaf or flower petal, licking a few pollen grains off its fur while grooming, or drinking the water from the vase can cause your cat to develop fatal kidney failure in less than 3 days," the page stated.

"Luckily, the lilies were left to greet Trevor and Katrina when they arrived home, so it had not been long before Mochi was rushed to the vet after consuming the plant. Her chances of survival are good, however, the procedure to flush out her system is not cheap."

Katrina shared a video of the moment Mochi was finally brought home after a few days spent recovering at the veterinary hospital?

"Mochi's first night [back at home] went amazing. I'm so happy she's safe and home," Katrina said.
