'A bin's a bin': Deb Knight ignites debate on ethics of throwing dog poo into strangers' bins

By Madhurima Haque|

Deb Knight has made a controversial admission, revealing she is the type of person to throw her dog's poo bags into residential rubbish.

Speaking on 2GB Sydney earlier today, the Afternoons with Deborah Knight presenter ignited the age-old debate over the ethics of using a stranger's bin to put your own waste in in a discussion with journalist Chris O'Keefe.

Knight started off by explaining there are fewer bins on the side of the road in the city, which is supposedly done purposely so individuals take their rubbish home with them.

"But when you have a dog and you take your dog for a walk and you pick up their business... is it OK to put that in someone else's bin?" she asked.

"Well I've seen people write on the front of their bins 'do not put your dog droppings in this bin'," O'Keefe said.

"But why not? Why do you care? It's a bin, right?" Knight asked.

"In the middle of summer, if it sits out the front of your bedroom window or something..." O'Keefe replied.

"I reckon a bin's a bin, but some people are very territorial about their bins. When I take Scooby for a walk?, if there's a bin out on the nature strip that someone's put out there, I'm gonna put my droppings in it," Knight declared matter-of-factly.

O'Keefe was quiet as he admitted, "In the middle of the night?, when my bins are overflowing... I've got nappy bags, I've got cardboard boxes... and I am just searching the street for bins. Any real estate and our stuff's going in."

As they laughed at their behaviour, Knight remarked, "Maybe we're revealing too much."?

Knight and O'Keefe seem to be in the minority, with one Reddit thread full of infuriated Sydney-siders claiming putting your own rubbish จC especially excrement จC into someone else's bin is just plain wrong.?

"[With] dog s--t sitting in a bin that sits in the sun all day, it doesn't take long for it to start festering flies and smelling in the general vicinity, along with those times where the bag breaks or isn't tied up and I have to spend my Saturday morning hosing out the bin cause of other peoples dog s--t," one commenter wrote.

"It seems like such a small thing in the greater scheme of things but holy f--k its infuriatingly annoying especially having to deal with a type of garbage you often wouldn't have to deal with. At the end of the day dog s--t doesnt weigh that much, take it to the park and dump it in the bin that's there specifically for it, or take it home."

Another commenter shared a similarly infuriating situation.

"I used to live next door to a school...All the soccer mums on garbage day, literally RIGHT after my bin was emptied, would come fill it to the brim with all their coffee cups, snotty tissues, happy meal boxes and junk mail catalogues from their vehicles. It was so rude," the commenter recounted.

"One day I called in sick to work just to catch the person. It was like 3 different women. Had words with them and thankfully it stopped happening as frequently."

However, some pointed out that the bin doesn't actually belong to anyone but the council, and so it's fair game.?

"It's worth noting, that even though people think of the bin as theirs, it actually belongs to the council. So feel free to chuck your dog s--t into anyone's bins. As others have said, I'd rather it in a bin than sitting on a brick wall or just left in the grass," said one commenter.

"Not sure why people get so precious about their bins, you put all sorts of filth in there so what's wrong with poop? Anyway if you see a red bin on the street don't hold back," encouraged another.

Deborah Knight is a presenter on 2GB, hosting Afternoons With Deborah Knight from 12-3pm, Monday to Friday.
