Vet clinic staff name the dog they would never own

By Kristine Tarbert|

Working as a vet or in a vet clinic can give you a great insight into different types of animals and different breeds.

?And it seems for some it also helps them decide what kind of pet they may like to have themselves, or, as in this case, what they would avoid.

The Alta Vista Animal Hospital in Texas shared a video on Instagram asking the staff the type of dog they would never own. And it was a surprisingly popular breed that was called out.

One staff member can be heard in the video asking some of her colleagues ?what breed of dog they "would not own" จC and the unanimous response was a shar pei?.

Shar pei are easily recognisable by the loose folds of skin on their bodies and their 'frowning' expressions.

Purina explains the shar pei is a member of the utility group and was originally bred for fighting, hunting, herding, and protection.

In the comments the clinic revealed why the vet staff chose this breed specifically.

"They can be super aggressive and reactive. We had one today like that, so it was on everyone's mind," they wrote.

"It takes a special pet owner to have a shar pei," they added.

According to Vets Choice, shar peis require an experience dog owner to "foster a healthy well-balanced" dog.

These dogs can also be prone to a number of health issues including hip and bone dysplasia, hypothyroidism, skin allergies, and skinfold infections.

In the comments many shar pei owners discussed the pros and cons of the breed, with some saying their own pet has no issues with aggression.

?Meanwhile some said the vet staff were spot on.

"I work at a vet clinic and I agree, Shar peis have really bad temper," one person said.
