How King Charles will be a very different monarch from his mother, Queen Elizabeth

By Suzy Monzer|

King Charles III is no stranger to the spotlight but upon assuming the throne, he's been cast into unchartered territory with questions raised about his rule.

Unlike the late Queen Elizabeth II, Charles has had decades to come to terms with his destiny as the longest-serving heir apparent in British history, as well being the oldest sovereign ever to assume the British throne.

9Honey's royal commentator Victoria Arbiter believes King Charles' reign will be drastically different to that of his late mother จC including having different priorities.

Despite being criticised for meddling in matters of state and vilified for years for his role in the breakdown of his marriage to Diana, Princess of Wales, support for the new King has been strong.

"So far, the British public has warmly welcomed its new monarch," Arbiter says in the video above.

"His near pitch-perfect handling of the Queen's passing, his subsequent accession and the remarkably smooth transition from mother to son have each helped win over some of his harshest critics.

"He's committed to making the monarchy more accessible and transparent, but perhaps his greatest challenge lies in maintaining its relevance in an increasingly fickle world."

Hitan Mehta, executive director of the British Asian Trust and a close colleague of the King since 2007, said Charles' passions would form a vital part of his work as sovereign.

"I think people underestimate how much he cares," said Mehta said.

"He often talks about the word he's going to leave for his grandchildren. He does worry about it."

Upon approaching his 74th birthday, the self-confessed workaholic ?will have little room to slow down with plans to deliver his first Christmas address to the nation before taking centre stage at the coronation in May.
