Six things we have learnt from Harry & Meghan, their new documentary after trailer release

By Natalie Oliveri|

T?he first look at Prince Harry and Meghan's new docu-series for Netflix is now out and while the clip is short, it says a lot about what viewers can expect.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are front and centre like we've never seen them before in this candid, no-hold-barred special, titled simply Harry & Meghan.

?And with a brief cameo by Meghan's sister-in-law, the Princess of Wales, the messy split with the royal family is almost certainly a big part of this project.

Here are six things we have learnt already ahead of the show's release on December 8.

1. The 'unhappy' Australian tour

The official poster for Harry & Meghan has the royal couple waking down the steps of the Sydney Opera House on day one of their first and only tour of Australia, in October 2018.

That tour, which included stops in New Zealand, ?Fiji and Tonga, and was the couple's first overseas ?visit after their wedding, has since been revealed to have been very unhappy behind the scenes.

From claims of shouting matches with their staff, to Meghan questioning the point of the royal walkabouts by saying "I can't believe I'm not getting paid for this", the docu-series is almost certainly going expose the couple's unhappy experiences during the tour จC from their point of view, of course.

Their reasons for stepping back from the royal family are likely to be laid out in full in this series, a warm-up to Prince Harry's book release in January.

As Meghan says in this trailer: "When the stakes are this high, doesn't it make more sense to hear our story from us?"?

2. Meghan's feud with Kate

Tellingly, the only photo of the royal family shown in this trailer features Meghan's sister-in-law front and centre.

Taken a full year before Prince Harry and Meghan's decision to step down as senior working royals, the photo is from the 2019 Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey.

Prince Harry and Meghan would use the event the following year, in 2020, as their final engagement with the royal family before moving to North America.

?Catherine is seen front and centre of this photo, staring directly into the camera, while Prince William is looking equally stony-faced next to her. Camilla, now Queen Consort, is also pictured looking downcast.

Interestingly, Prince Andrew จC who was seated next to Meghan at the service จC has been cropped out.

But other photos from the event, which are not shown in this trailer, give a warmer impression of Meghan and Kate's friendship, the two women greeting each other with a kiss and embrace at the entrance.

The inclusion of this photo showing a sour-looking ?Kate is an indication Meghan may criticise the Princess of Wales, again, and speak about their relationship จC or lack of. We all remember her comments to Oprah, about how Kate made her cry, right?

3. Deliberate timing

Prince William and Catherine are in Boston for a crucial three-day visit aimed at strengthening the historic UK-US alliance.

And it will culminate in Prince William's environmental passion project, the Earthshot Prize Awards, carrying on a legacy of fighting climate change ?from his late grandfather the Duke of Edinburgh and his father King Charles III.

Prince Harry and Meghan have been living in the US since mid-2020 but know their lack of royal standing means they are limited in what they can do to compared to Prince William and Catherine's positions as future King and Queen of England.

With a new race row at Buckingham Palace that only backs up their claims to Oprah that the monarchy is indeed racist จC but an incident they could not have foreseen จC Prince Harry and Meghan couldn't have been luckier with how the last couple of days have turned out.

Their trailer is dominating headlines around the world, while Prince William and Catherine soldier on with smiles as they continue with their pre-arranged agenda in Boston.?

Prince Harry and Meghan would have known full well when this trailer would be released and the attention their "love story" would get, not only with the media but royal-loving fans both in the US and around the world.

4. They love to be photographed

Prince Harry and Meghan have had their own photographers for some time and this trailer shows just how important they are to the royal couple and their endeavours.

They present the duke and duchess during some of their most intimate and raw moments and also show their 'fun' side, both on and off duty.

One is a candid snap of Meghan sitting on the bench inside the kitchen of their home at Frogmore Cottage on the Windsor Estate.

It was taken on March 7, 2020 after they attended The Mountbatten Festival of Music at the Royal Albert Hall during their farewell tour of the UK.

Meghan wore a red cape-style gown by Safiyaa? and can be seen in that outfit, minus its cape. Harry has taken off his military jacket.

It's a rare look inside their renovated property, which remains their official UK base.

Judging from these photos taken by a professional photographer shadowing the couple, it seems a candid, tell-all documentary had been on the cards for longer than we all thought. ?

Another photo shows Meghan in tears sitting on the lounge, with a phone in her hand. We don't yet know its context or what has upset her.

She is later shown cradling her baby bump in a sheer dress, while another shows she and Harry kissing in a photobooth and on holidays in Africa.

Not surprisingly, there are more photos of Meghan featured in this trailer than there are of her husband.

5. ?Prince Harry plays the guitar

With comparisons to Ed Sheeran and questions about whether Prince Harry is actually playing a real chord (not likely), his guitar is featured throughout this trailer.

The duke is seen serenading Meghan, who is grinning beside him.

The guitar also features in another shot of Harry and Meghan with their dog, a Beagle named Guy.

This photo is another selfie, taken by Meghan, leading many to wonder just how many more photos like these we'll get to see in the series.?

6. Unseen wedding photo

Prince Harry and Meghan had two wedding receptions and their evening one was reserved for their nearest and dearest.

Limited photos were released from that night and now we have another.

This photo shows the ?newlyweds spinning each other around on the dance floor, Meghan wearing her halter-neck Stella McCartney gown.

In the background Mike and Zara Tindall, Prince Harry's cousin, are dancing, while a woman with hair like Camilla can be seen just over Harry's shoulder.

Harry & Meghan promises to show the royal couple exactly how they want to be seen?: candid and real.
