A? mum has taken to social media for help in solving a week-long mystery in her house - though now she has her answer, says she is "embarrassed" by the call-out.

It was her toddler who finally answered the big question surrounding an unfamiliar object Melanie and her husband found ?in the corner of a room.

The parents spent weeks observing the item, thinking it was "some kind of insect breeding its babies".

"Does someone know what this is?" the mum asked in a popular private Facebook group, hoping she may be able to get some help in identifying the item.

"Google image search gave me nothing," added the mum who shared that she lived in Virginia in the US.

Melanie asked whether locals may know of some native bugs it could be a nest for.

"Anyone from over here can think of specific wildlife this could be? This is the corner right behind our front door, so I fear something is alive in there."

The post quickly gathered the attention of thousands of parents and group members, who got together to try to figure out what the odd-looking object was.

"Never seen anything like that before, other than half an old potato," one person commented.

Another said, "Meant to be asleepกญ. here's me scrolling 300 comments to see what this is?."

Some suggested it could be a wasp nest or moth cocoon.

While the group members spent hours tried to solve the mystery, Melanie's four-year-old toddler knew exactly what it was, eventually telling his parents it was his 'pet rock'.

"My husband was about to stab it with a knife and remarked that it was 'like a rock', when my son said 'That IS my rock!' and proceeded to unstuck it from the corner!" Melanie wrote in an update.

The mum was left in hysterics and slightly "embarrassed" she and her husband didn't realise.

?She had even written in her original post that the object was "definitely not a rock, gravel, pebble" when some suggested that's what it looked like.

"I swear it felt like something else entirely!" she wrote, thanking people for their help.

The update left group members howling with laughter.

?"Haha! My son likes to collect rocks, so I also find them all round the house," one said.

"How funny! Don't you just love kids," another wrote.
