Debate erupts over a 'mind blowing' hack for mopping the floor using only clean water

By Rachael Gavin|

When most people mop they tend to use one bucket of soapy water to clean the floor and rinse the dirty mop head. And it's a big problem because it means our floors are never really that clean.

One woman claims to have a solution for this with what she calls a "mind blowing hack", which she shared in a video on her Facebook page ?tanyahomeinspo.

For this hack Tanya puts a separate bucket with cleaning solution and boiling water inside her mopping bucket.? This is so that whenever she needs to wet the mop again, she wrings out the dirty mop in the spin section before dipping in the water.

However, many of Tanya's followers were confused by the hack and kicked off a debate in the comment section of the post about just how effective it is.

The video has caused such a stir it has had 1,500 comments, 27,000 likes and been played 5.7 million times.

"But you're still putting your dirty mop in it to get it wet again?," one person commented.

"Unless you have a whole other mop bucket to wash the mop off every time, it's still getting dirty. I've never understood this," another said.

"Only the first time putting the mop in. After that, it's no different," a follower posted.

But others appreciated the hack and thought there was some merit to it.

"The hack isกญ as you mop the floor and spin out the mop, the dirty water goes into the bucket and you're not putting dirty water back into the cleaning solution in the white container," a woman commented.

"The only thing I can see as a good thing is that it is easier to change the mop water with just the little bucket and more frequently 'cause that big ole thing is heavy when you have to keep putting fresh water. I use a regular mop bucket inside that one just cause it's easier to dump and I like the mop cause it spins out most of the water," another explained.

And one follower suggested that if you're using disinfectant then the only issue is cross-contamination between rooms. For example, if you mop the bathroom floor and then mop the kitchen floor without changing the water.

"The whole point of the chemicals is to kill bacteria therefore it doesn't matter if you're putting it back into the same water. Just change it for each room."?

As a solution to the dirty water mopping problem, some of Tanya's followers recommended using a mop bucket with two sections instead of the hack.

If that's not possible and you really want a thoroughly cleaned floor, some of the commenters suggested mopping the floor a few times so that by the second or third time the floor is being cleaned with clean water.

The other option if you don't want to use multiple buckets or mop the floor several times, is to just change the water frequently.
