The appliance expert's problem with the tea towel trick isn't just that it doesn't work, he also said it could ruin the dishwasher.

"If you're putting a towel on your dishwasher door? to dry your dishes faster that's ridiculous and the towel isn't doing anything," he said.

"As a matter of fact you're risking damaging the door latch, the door or the hinges on your dishwasher."

McMullan suggested people think the hack works because they expect it to.

In the comments section of the video, one person said another reason the hack appears to do something is because the tea towel makes the door stay open slightly which allows the steam to escape.

Instead of putting a tea towel over the dishwasher door to dry dishes faster, many who viewed the video simply just open the door when the dishwasher is finished.

Some with newer dishwashers mentioned the door on their appliance automatically pops open? when a cycle is finished to allow the steam to escape.

"The dishes stay hot a long time, open the door after it's done or spend the $ on a unit that pops open. Love your rant!?" one said.

"My dishwasher beeps, displays 'end' and I wait for that end to disappear, open the door and leave it for a hour. Then empty," another commented.

In fact, leaving the dishwasher door open when it's not in use is actually very good for the appliance according to CHOICE appliance expert Ashley Iredale.

"Like your washing machine, your dishwasher is a wet environment and its rubber door seals are a little delicate," he said in a CHOICE article.

"If you shut the door tightly, your seals won't get a chance to dry out, promoting mould growth and leaving you with foul odours. Plus, your seals could become crushed over time and not seal as well. Leaving your unit ajar helps them retain the shape."?
