'I've never had mould in my washing machine thanks to one thing I do after each and every use'
By Rachael Gavin|
D?oing just one simple thing after the washing machine has finished a cycle could mean never having to deal with mould in the appliance.
Both front and top loader machines are prone to developing mould, but it's a particular pain point for owners of front loaders because ?of the door seal.
That mouldy build up then results in your appliance developing an awful odour and clothes and linens coming out of the wash dirty and smelly.

But that can all be prevented in about two seconds by simply leaving the door of the washing machine open after a load is done.
It's something I do with my top loader machine in addition to pulling out and emptying the lint filters and the detergent dispenser drawer (which is the main area that gets mouldy in this type of appliance).
And I have never seen a spot of mould in my washing machine so it definitely helps.
This mould prevention step is backed up by laundry expert Melissa Pateras?, who talked about the impact of the gross problem in front loaders in a TikTok video.
"?If you don't leave the door open every time it's not in use and dry it out after each load it could look like this," she said while showing a washing machine (see below) she was asked to clean.

"The laundry washed in this machine will smell just as bad as it looks. Mould stains the rubber gasket and it's almost impossible to get it back."
To clean the appliance, Pateras wiped the rubber seal until dry and then used Sugerlary Stain Cleaner from Amazon to clean it.
Mouldy washing machines can also be cleaned with white ?vinegar, which can be sprayed onto the seal and then wiped with a cloth or scrubbed lightly with a soft brush, like a toothbrush.
Then clean the entire machine by putting it on the hottest longest cycle with ?two cups of vinegar.

Once that's finished wipe the inside with a cloth and leave the door open to dry (which you'll now be doing after every cycle from now on)?.
If you have a top loader and the detergent dispenser drawer is mouldy, remove it and spray with vinegar, leave it to sit for 15 minutes and scrub with hot soapy water.
For the drawer compartment, spray with vinegar and after 15 minutes scrub the inside with hot soapy water. You might need a long-handled brush for this if the compartment is deep.
