Laundry detergent could be the only stain removal product you need, according to an expert

Look inside any laundry cupboard and you're sure to find all sorts ?of different products for tackling all the many messes and issues our clothes and linen encounter.
But it's possible you could reduce the number of items you have on hand for laundry thanks to a surprising tip for stain removal.?
According to a laundry expert we can save a bit of cash on our household expenses (and empty our laundry cupboard a little) by changing our approach to stain removal.

In a TikTok video Melissa Pateras claimed that "95 per cent" of stains can be removed using a good laundry detergent ?or dishwashing liquid will do the job.
"This is most times, ?all that you need to pre-treat a stain and get it out the first time," she said.
"Apply some quality? detergent จC because they are not all created equally จC [to the stain] or you can also try Dawn [dishwashing liquid]. Let it sit for a while จC up to an hour, even overnight จC throw it into the machine and wash it as normal."

The effectiveness of laundry detergent and dishwashing liquid as stain removers is backed up by consumer advocate Choice, though it does recommend having a stain remover on hand, especially for tough stains.
Choice says dishwashing liquid works on grease and oil stains จC which makes sense because these products tend to include a degreaser element in them, while liquid laundry detergent is good for grass and mud stains.

Using products you already own for stain removal isn't the only way to save money in the laundry.
The biggest money saver of all is switching from washing in hot water to cold water, as hot water uses a lot of electricity and will send your power bills soaring.
You can also reduce the amount of laundry detergent you use per cycle as only one to two tablespoons is considered enough to clean your clothes and linen. That way you won't need to buy laundry detergent as often.
Switching fabric softener for white vinegar is another good option as you can buy a 2L bottle of white vinegar from the supermarket for $1.70. Then all you need to do is add half a cup of vinegar to the fabric softener compartment to help keep clothes and towels soft.?
