Supermarket Sleuths: Costco's new rotisserie chicken packaging gets a thumbs up, but there's a catch

By Jo Abi|

C?ostco Australia has begun rolling out its new rotisserie chicken packaging, and so far the feedback has been good.

One customer picked up one of the wholesale retailer's signature Kirkland chickens in Shoreline, Western Australia, and shared a photo on Reddit's 'Costco' thread.

"Bagged $5 Rotisserie Chicken (Shoreline, WA)," they wrote.

"My local Costco updated the rotisserie chicken packaging. Tastes the same."

When I first purchased a Costco chicken, it was in the original container-style packaging, which made them easier to stack in my trolley. I bought three!

I remember commenting to my partner Shamus at the time that they seemed just a little undercooked.

His theory was that Costco cooked the chickens just to the point of safety and not beyond, as many customers would use them to cook multiple other dishes, which made sense. This may also be why they were not being seasoned.

We were eating it straight out of the container with some Costco Caesar salad on the side, so I would have preferred it to be cooked a little more.

However, now the packaging has changed to a bag, they also seemed to be cooked a little more and are closer to similar rotisserie chickens you would purchase at Coles and Woolies.

At $4.99, Costco is still the winner when it comes to price จC at Coles and Woolies they can cost anything from $8 to $12 depending on if you can grab one when they are doing their quick sales, but usually $12.

Not all customers have been happy with the packaging change.

"This is a non starter, the quality of plastic looks much lower than the original plastic casing which was BPA free," one said.

"I'm sorry, how am I suppose to buy 50 of these stacked up and then resell it later? Get it together Costco," another joked.?

"NOOOOOOOOO! Now I can't tell which one is biggest by seeing which bird touches the top of the container. Also, it now has to be removed from the bag just to cut a portion from it," added another.?

Others are happy with the change.

"Bagged rotisserie is common in my local grocery stores," one commented.

"I'm surprised Costco didn't start earlier. Any hard shell plastic takes up space in the garbage as well. Having to just throw away a bag would be better.?"

"I buy them then season them more make some chicken quesadillas or tacos. Always fire," one Costco customer commented.

?"I'm actually so excited for my Costco to get these," another explained.

"I've had many times where I'm carrying many things in at once and I get hot chicken juice spilled onto me because the plastic pops open."

"I love the bag so much easier to carry and bring in the house," another said.

Costco is selling Easter treats ahead of the long weekend. (Costco Australia)

For those planning to visit Costco this week to try out their new rotisserie chickens, you may also want to pick up one of these!

They are selling Easter-themed sheet cakes for $34.99, and they would make a perfect dessert for family gatherings this weekend.?

And this, dear readers, is why I rarely walk away with any savings at Costco. I spot something shiny or delicious and HAVE to buy it.

I'll try to do better next time!?
