Dr Justin Coulson shares his tips to manage a strong-willed child

A?re you parenting a strong-willed child? One of those kids that knows better than you, says no all the time and has to have things their way all the time?

According to Dr Justin Coulson, having a strong-willed child is more common than many parents realise. ?

And while they can be very tricky to manage, there are a few strategies you can use to help make life a little easier.?

"We need kids to follow along with our basic requests, to leave the park, to brush their teeth or to leave their brother alone?," he asserts.

Dr Coulson's first piece of advice, is to be aware of their triggers

"Be aware of what triggers those big emotions and navigate around them," he advises.
"If we know they hate leaving the park, make sure there is something exciting to come home to."

"Secondly, if force creates resistance, our job is to try and reduce pressure on our kids by asking them rather than telling them.

Rather than demanding they get in the car or brush their teeth: Say something like 'How many minutes to go, five or 10?' or 'Do you want mum or dad to help you brush your teeth?'
